A Tesla trade-in offer can look disappointing next to a private-sale price. Sometimes it still leaves you better off, because a qualifying trade-in reduces the tax on the replacement vehicle. In other places there is no such reduction. Rebates introduce a separate set of rules — and must not be counted twice.
Checked November 6, 2026. This is an AI-assisted, source-checked buying-cost analysis focused on Model Y, not a road test or a personalised valuation. Figures below separate USD from CAD. Tax treatment depends on the transaction and registration location; confirm the written calculation with your dealer or tax adviser.
What a new Model Y costs now
We checked Tesla’s cash configurators with the Canadian EVAP checkbox switched off. These are vehicle/trim prices with standard selections, before delivery and other fees, tax, financing, optional equipment and rebates. They are not drive-away totals.
- Rear-Wheel Drive — US (USD): $39,990; Canada (CAD): $49,990.
- Premium All-Wheel Drive — US (USD): $49,990; Canada (CAD): $64,990.
- Performance All-Wheel Drive — US (USD): $57,990; Canada (CAD): $74,990.
Sources: Tesla US configurator and Tesla Canada configurator. The regional vehicles are not necessarily identical in specification. Get a delivery-location-specific order summary; do not compare a price after “estimated savings” with another seller’s cash price. Fuel savings are future estimates, not money deducted from today’s bill.
What will Tesla pay for your old car?
There is no honest universal offer. Tesla’s Canadian trade-in policy says Tesla valuations depend on configuration, age, mileage, history and market data. Offers are valid for 30 days or 1,600 kilometres, subject to accurate details. In the US, the stated final-offer limit is 30 days or 1,000 miles. Obtain the written offer rather than treating an online estimate as a contract.
For a public US benchmark, KBB’s page for a 2023 Model Y Standard Sport Utility 4D, ZIP 85001, showed good-condition estimates of US$29,110 trade-in and US$30,790 private party. The table was valid through November 5, 2026, so it is a recent reference, not a live November 6 offer. Its published condition range was $27,510–$30,310 for trade-in and $29,090–$32,090 for private party. KBB source.
Those estimates are not Tesla offers, Canadian valuations or completed sales. We have not obtained a verified Canadian quote for a specific VIN. For Canada, request Tesla’s offer and a second local buyer’s offer, then compare equivalent model years, trims, kilometres and accident histories. Dealer retail asking prices include a different business margin and are not what the dealer will pay you.
The tax calculation that can reverse the result
For a qualifying trade, compare trade-in credit plus the actual tax reduction with private-sale proceeds minus selling costs. Subtract the outstanding loan from both routes when comparing equity. A C$25,000 allowance with a C$30,000 loan does not create a C$25,000 down payment; it leaves C$5,000 to settle.
Illustration, not a quote: qualifying C$25,000 personal-car trade, 13% HST saving C$3,250; C$28,500 private sale less C$500 costs = C$28,000.
In that simplified Ontario illustration, the trade is ahead by C$250 despite a C$3,500 lower headline price. Private sale breaks even at C$28,750 if selling costs are C$500 and all other terms remain equal. The example assumes a fully qualifying personal-vehicle trade and enough taxable purchase value; it excludes rebates, loan interest and changes to the replacement-car price.
CRA guidance distinguishes trades according to whether the seller must charge GST/HST. Business vehicles and leases require separate treatment. Provincial rules also matter: Québec has specific GST/QST calculations, including estimated-value rules. Do not apply an Ontario illustration nationwide.
In the US, rules vary by state. California’s dealer guidance does not allow the trade-in allowance to be excluded from the taxable selling price. A trade there therefore cannot automatically claim the benefit used in our Ontario example.
Rebates: what to count and what to leave out
United States: the IRS states that federal new, used and qualified commercial clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A new purchase made now should not assume the old US$7,500 federal credit. Earlier qualifying acquisitions have separate rules. IRS guidance.
Canada: EVAP can provide up to C$5,000 for eligible battery-electric vehicles in 2026. Eligibility includes the specific vehicle, transaction value, manufacturing origin, buyer and participating seller. Transport Canada specifies a final transaction value of C$50,000 or less unless made in Canada, plus origin requirements. Taxes and fees are applied before the incentive. A trade-in does not automatically make an otherwise ineligible vehicle eligible.
Tesla’s incentive page currently says Model 3 is not eligible and warns that Tesla participation and funding are not guaranteed. The Model Y configurator’s rebate checkbox is not final approval. Ask the store to confirm the exact trim, options, transaction and rebate on the bill of sale. Do not budget a provincial rebate without checking the current provincial vehicle list and available funding. A business tax deduction is also not a dollar-for-dollar rebate.
Our verdict
If the trade-in’s after-tax benefit is close to a realistic private-sale net, convenience may justify trading. Sell privately when the extra net proceeds remain substantial after tax differences, preparation, advertising and your time. Before buying, obtain an insurance quote, assess home-charging installation costs and test your regular routes. Cheap electricity alone does not prove that replacing a paid-off car will save money.
See the vehicle, then check your numbers
