A practical choice, not a universal winner

This comparison is based on official documentation checked November 4, 2026; it is not a hands-on speed or reliability test. Our recommendation is to decide first where your notes should live and what must work without an internet connection.

Notion: prepare pages for offline work

Notion supports offline pages in its desktop and mobile applications. Download the pages you need before leaving your connection; do not assume a browser tab contains your entire workspace offline. Its documentation also explains automatic downloads on paid plans.

This approach may suit you if you already work in Notion and want selected material available while travelling. Test the actual pages and content types you depend on before a trip.

Obsidian: local files come first

Obsidian stores notes as files in a local vault. Its download page lists Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. Cross-device synchronisation is a separate decision: Obsidian documents its own Sync service and alternative file-based methods. A local vault is not automatically an independent backup.

Our assessment: Obsidian is a stronger starting point if ordinary local files are your priority; Notion is worth keeping if its workspace already fits your workflow and downloaded pages cover your offline needs.

A useful trial

Create five notes, attach one file, go offline, edit, reconnect and check another device. Also try exporting or backing up. Which workflow produces fewer surprises for you?
